Some people claim that Korean society doesn’t
need single sex universities anymore. This is because they think Korean society
has been changed a lot, so there is no more sexual discrimination, especially
in the education era. Also, there are some parents who insist that because of
single sex schools, their sons get a smaller range of universities to choose
from. Then, does Korea society still need Women’s University? The answer is
yes, and there are 3 reasons for that.
First and foremost, in Women’s Universities
students can be treated as a kind of human, not as a woman. Actually there
still is sexual discrimination in university. Even though students have equal opportunities
to get education, some professors discriminate against female students when
they give references for jobs. Many women quit their jobs as soon as they get
pregnant, for still Korean society has a poor working system for married women.
Because of this, some professors usually think that giving references to female
students is useless, and put a priority on giving references to males. In
contrast, in a women’s university, there is no sexual discrimination. Students
are all the same humans and don’t have their abilities underestimated because
of their gender.
Moreover, students a Women’s universities act
as humans not as women. Unlike women in coed university, women at Women’s
universities are not the weaker sex anymore. During school festivals and
student elections, students of Women’s Universities do their tasks
independently without depending on help from males. For example, in female universities,
students carry heavy loads for festivals or membership trips; moreover,
students become student presidents and lead the entire school. These roles are
usually done by male students in coed colleges. By doing these activities,
females can prove that they are totally equal with males and they can do
anything that men do.
Unfortunately, there is one drawback.
Frankly speaking, the strongest point of Women’s University is that they do not
allow men to enter the university. However it is also the weakest point for students.
There are some people among employers who dislike women from single gender
Universities. This is because they think these women couldn’t learn how to deal
with males and work with males. However, students can overcome the disadvantages
by attending several union clubs. At Ewha Woman’s University, there are some
cross registration classes with coed universities. As a result, although there is
weak point about single sex universities, through several activities, students
can access both the advantages of female universities and the advantages of coed
school.
In conclusion, Korean still needs Women’s
Universities to help female students become people rather than just women. Also,
with several benefits of single sex school, students can become free of being
treated as weak and protected from stereotypes. Ewha is the first Women’s
University in Korea, and the reason why it was founded was to hedge against the
sexual discrimination. Although it seems as if the discrimination was
diminished in Korea society, it still exists. For these reasons I strongly
disagree with the person who insists that Women’s University like Ewha should
be changed into coed Universities.
